BEFORE BREAKFAST x TAG STATIONERY joint project
BEFORE BREAKFAST is a design studio in London that makes handmade stationery. With a concept of sustainability, they use environmentally friendly materials such as recycled paper and soy ink to produce paper products, mainly notebooks, using RISOGRAPH printing and traditional bookbinding machines. Their designs are characterized by modern and playful designs by NICKI SHEN from Taiwan.
We have produced a mini ink set and a mini sketch pad in collaboration with TAG STATIONERY. We explored commonalities between TAG STATIONERY, which is based in Kyoto, and BEFORE BREAKFAST, which is based in London, and found that the commonality was "tea."
Kyoto is home to places such as Uji, where traditional Japanese green tea production and culture remain strong. London has a diverse black tea culture, typified by Royal Milk Tea and English Breakfast. Even though the cultures were born from the same tea leaves, styles and customs differ depending on the region. However, the daily activity of enjoying tea is surely based on the same feelings. With "tea" as the theme, each culture is expressed in five colors of ink.
In addition, we have created a limited edition of our standard BEFORE BREAKFAST product, the Sketch Pad, in a themed color scheme. These beautiful sketch pads are individually handmade and bound using 100% recycled paper.

From Kyoto to London, the distance is 9470km. The love of tea is what brings these two places together. Tea comes in many forms and is enjoyed in a number of different ways. This is also reflected in their understated yet distinct color palette.
The distance from Kyoto to London is 9,470 km. These far-flung places are connected by a love of tea. Different cultures and regions reflect different ways of enjoying tea, and subtle yet distinct colors, even though they use the same tea leaves.
Sometimes tea stains are accidentally made by their cups, and leave a mark on the table. They are very much a subtle feature, and a part of our everyday lives.
When I occasionally look closely at the tea stains left on the table by the cup, they seem like "signs of our daily lives" as we live in each of these places.
